Frequently asked questions
Is audio redaction sufficient for GDPR compliance?+
Audio redaction is one necessary step in a data minimisation process. GDPR requires that PII is removed or anonymised before data is shared, retained beyond its necessary period, or transferred outside a protected jurisdiction. Consult with your Data Protection Officer regarding your organisation's specific obligations — redaction alone may not satisfy all requirements.
What is replaced during audio redaction?+
You can choose to replace redacted segments with: silence (complete audio removal), a 1 kHz beep tone (standard broadcast practice for censored content), or white noise. Silence is cleanest for meeting recordings; beep tones are standard for broadcast and documentary contexts.
Can I automatically detect and redact speech in audio?+
The current tool requires manual time-range marking — you specify the timestamps to redact. Automatic PII detection in audio (speech-to-text + entity recognition + automatic redaction) requires AI transcription services and is not yet available in the browser-based tool. For high-volume redaction workflows, consider a cloud-based transcription + redaction service.
Privacy first
All audio processing runs locally in your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. No file is ever uploaded — only metadata counters are saved for signed-in dashboard stats.
