Frequently asked questions
What should a finished podcast episode measure?+
For Spotify and Apple Podcasts: −16 LUFS integrated with −1 dBTP true-peak is the safest universal target. Apple Podcasts normalises to −16 LUFS on playback; Spotify normalises to −14 LUFS. Mastering to −16 LUFS means Apple passes it through unchanged and Spotify only slightly increases it.
Do I need to master to both MP3 and WAV?+
Submit to podcast hosting platforms in the highest quality format they accept (most accept WAV or 320 kbps MP3). The host generates its own MP3 for distribution. Mastering to WAV preserves quality for the host's encoding stage. Only export to MP3 if your host requires it or you are self-hosting.
Should I master each episode separately or batch process?+
Each episode should be mastered separately unless episodes were recorded in identical conditions. Loudness varies episode-to-episode based on the guest, environment, and recording length. Batch processing with a fixed target LUFS is fine if measurements are consistent, but individual measurement-and-correction produces more reliable results.
