H.264 for compatibility, H.265 for half the file size at the same quality, AV1 for the smallest files (slower without HW), VP9 for browser playback. ProRes for editing workflows.
On hardware-accelerated codecs, JAD is comparable to HandBrake's NVENC/QuickSync paths. On software encoders, HandBrake's native binary will be faster than WebAssembly — but JAD requires no install.
