NVIDIA RTX 40-series (Ada), Intel Arc Alchemist+, and Apple M3 / M4. Older hardware can decode AV1 but not encode in hardware.
AV1 is royalty-free (no licensing tax for streaming services) and ~30% smaller than H.265 at equivalent quality. Browser support is universal in 2025+.
